Dating pregnancy straight after a miscarriage
Unfortunately, some pregnancies do not develop correctly (the percentage increases with maternal age).A miscarriage occurs when the body spontaneously terminates a pregnancy.Dr Bhattacharya, who led the meta-analysis, said: “This review of all the published research to date shows categorically that conceiving within six months after a miscarriage is best.“In 2010 we were the first to report that conceiving straight after miscarriage was more successful than waiting.Overall, women who became pregnant within six months of miscarrying had better outcomes and a lower risk of complications than their counterparts who waited longer to conceive after a miscarriage.
Specifically, women who conceive within six months after a miscarriage are less likely to miscarry again or experience other pregnancy-related complications when compared with women who wait for longer periods of time. "Women can be broadly reassured that the next pregnancy is likely to have a positive outcome, and they should try to conceive as soon as they feel physically and mentally ready," says study researcher Sohinee Bhattacharya, MD, an obstetrician at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, in an email.
It's normal to be concerned with your fertility after early miscarriage.
Many couples want to try to conceive again right away, while others need time to heal.
“It is not clear why this is the case - one explanation might be that if somebody has had a miscarriage they might take particularly good care of themselves, be more motivated and may even be more fertile - but that is just speculation at this point.
” The meta-analysis is published in the Human Reproduction Update journal on Tuesday.
